Adventure Pinball: Forgotten Island is a take on the traditional pinball machine with an added multi-level format and 3D graphics. It is powered by the Unreal engine which allows for fast action play. The levels include innovative new elements to enhance the game and offers a fun new version of traditional pinball.
With both a story mode or single table, the game provides some variety. The story mode allows players to progress through nine levels as a story unfolds and the single table pits players against each other to achieve the highest score. The levels each provide individual goals that must be reached to move on to the next level. While these can be fun, they can also be very difficult to reach and a player will be left feeling discouraged. You can adjust the difficulty levels but this only provides a player with more balls, implying that one can achieve the goals if given more attempts. The game design is creative if not somewhat confusing. The levels often include secret areas with a number of tables through which the players can move via railway, pterodactyls and even blowholes. It’s not always easy to figure them out but they can be fun nonetheless.
The game features fast action movement from the third person view from behind the flippers with cameras shifting to ensure that the ball stays in the centre of the screen. While you feel the movement of the action through this process, it can be a bit nauseating as well.
The graphics separate the levels cohesively although they are not up to a standard one might expect in a 3-D environment. Although the game is backed by a substantially powerful engine, it sometimes seems to be less than what the game requires to run at the highest level of smoothness. This may also be a result of the camera panning but it does take away from the game. Pinball enthusiasts may not enjoy this interpretation of the game but once you adjust to the differences, you could easily enjoy playing Adventure Pinball.
The game offers a decent soundtrack keeping the pace lively and exciting. Flippers and bumpers are also included to provide an authentic pinball experience and are accompanied by the appropriate sounds effects and other more unusual sounds also make an appearance through the levels.
The hidden secrets are an interesting part of the game and not only give players a chance to build their points, but also are involved in assisting players to meet their objectives. Add on levels are also supported by the game and can be acquired at the Adventure Pinball site online.
The game is far from perfect but it does provide players with a first-person shooter game that flashes back to a time where the genre was most popular. It does have enough modern features to make the game relevant in today’s technology although the graphics don’t live up to some of the state of the art games that exist. There is enough variety to keep most fans engaged and it is lighthearted and without the violence that is often seen in today’s games, it is appropriate for any member of the family.
