Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is the second release for the role-playing game franchise for GameCube.
In this story, the Hero, Michael, is five years into the future beyond Pokemon Colosseum and he has just learned about Shadow Pokemon through the professor. These evil Pokemon have been tainted and their hearts have been closed. The professor gives Michael a Snag Machine and sends him out to capture these dark souls and return them to their original state. So the main goal of the game is to purify the Shadow Pokemon, which is pretty much the same objective as the previous game. In this one, however, they have added a Purifying Chamber where the player can store his unpurified characters and then hit them all at once. Once the Pokémon have all been purified, Michael can return home and put away the Snag Machine in case he needs it on another day (like tomorrow, when you play again).
Of course you first need to capture the shady little creeps and you can do so by means of the Snag Machine which again adheres to the game that was its predecessor. There are eighty three different Pokemon that need to be purified and each of these has their own set of evil skills that will aid them as they try to escape you and even battle you off if you should have them cornered. If they do succeed in evade you, you’ll get the help of Miror B that will appear to you with a Shadow Pokemon to offer you.
So once you have caught the little beasts, you can either purify them in the chamber with up to three other Shadow Pokemons or you can bring them into the party and battle it out with them. If you choose the chamber, this is, of course, easier and you can purify more than one at time but you won’t get any points for experience. You’ll only gain experience through the battle process.
Players can access the Mount Battle area to participate in the 100 player training challenge if they like to win prizes for every one of their defeats out of a 100 potential battles. Coupons that are won through the battles can be exchanged at the front desk for prizes that will help you in your quest.
In this version of the game, there are three new PokeSpots that you can access. Should you arrive at these special locations, you can bait the wild Pokemon with snacks and capture them to be used as a trade for rare Pokemon. Beware of the Munchlax that might appear to steal the snacks you are using as bait.
The Pokemon franchise is quite a popular genre of games and was, essentially, one of the games that really started the adoption of anime related entertainment in North America. Since then it has grown in recognition there but the primary area where Pokemon does gangbuster business is still in Japan. Many versions are soon to be available in the Pokemon series – the first was Colosseum and now the Gale of Darkness is the sequel.
