Space Invaders Extreme is a recreation of the classic Space Invaders game which was released on the 30th anniversary of the original arcade game for DS and PSP. The extreme version is a remastered iteration made by Backbone Entertainment.
In this game, it is the job of the player to control the laser that can move from side to side and fires at the Invaders that come from above. The player must shoot these to earn point and to stop them from destroying him as they appear. If the player is hit or one of the aliens lands they lose their life. Each level has an altered formation with either a number of aliens grouped together or a single invader quickly moving down the screen. There are occasions where you must face larger invaders with their group of guards. Each can fire at you or divide into two or propel themselves downward. Players can achieve bonuses by following the instructions on screen.
If a player shoots a number of same coloured invaders, he will receive a boost such as a bomb, laser, shield or broad shot. Shoot another round of four following and a UFO appears. If you can hit the UFO, a bonus round ensues where a player must achieve a goal over a limited time. Once that is accomplished, the games moves into Fever Time and the player becomes more powerful for a set time to achieve a quick round of escalated point scoring. Combinations will trigger reward like a roulette UFO with bonus offerings.
A player cycles through 5 stages and can move forward based on the score achieved. Playing in Arcade Mode will permit a player to return to the game at the same level where they were hit which is not possible in Ranking Mode although they may post to the leaderboard in that mode. The Stage Mode permits a player to replay completed stages. The Xbox Live Arcade version includes a four player option and players can compete online if they wish. With the DS game, players can compete with single or multi player card options or online.
Either versions are accompanied by a soundtrack that differs from one to the other but the main version is the second screen available in the DS where one can increase the size of the play. When not used to make the screen larger, it offers information about game play. Both versions contain network capabilities.
The game has been praised by critics as high energy, easy to play and highly addictive. It is described as having maintained its original charm with upgraded technology and increased speed. Both versions were described as some of the best shooter games available. A second version was released with additional content such as new formations and stages, time attack and bingo. Additionally, a mini version was also released entitled Space Invaders Extreme Z which does not offer an option to play with multiple players or to post online via internet rankings.
